These striking lines from Michael Jackson’s Heal the World, seem to melt everyone’s heart wherever they hear it . on the other hand, can we really understand its underlying meaning? Isn’t it meant to awake the people’s sleeping souls and conscience?
Climate is usually defined as the average weather in a place. It includes patterns play a fundamental role in shaping natural ecosystems, human economies and cultures that depend on them. But the climate is not what is used to be because the past is no longer a reliable predictor of the future. Our climate is rapidly changing with disruptive impacts and that change is progressing faster than any seen in the last 2,000 years. This horrifying truth about climate change was proven by supertyphoon Ferdie. On the 13th day of September, it made a landfall on Itbayat Island Batanes. All of a sudden, it made great devastations on the island. Their roofs were even badly destroyed. Right after the typhoon, the people living there were so saddened. All their efforts became worthless. In spite of this, there’s no casualty. It only signifies that they are prepared. this place was declared as a state of calamity. However, they’re so lucky that nobody perished.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPCC), the extent of climate change effects on individual regions will vary over time and with the ability of different societal and environmental systems to mitigate or adapt to change. Isn’t it alarming? In addition to this, IPCC forecasts a temperature rise of 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century.
Some people say that climate change is a coarse. Well, it’s not a coarse but an extreme revenge. People seem so abusive to the environment. Most of us don’t even know how to dispose their wastes properly. Trashes here, trashes there. That’s the real image of our surrounding. If this foul- smelling attitude will be possessed by millions of people, can you imagine how untidy the Earth would be? Every action worth thousands of results, it may be a good or bad effect. That’s why we need to think a hundred times before doing an action. Who knows it could bear something that will harm you? Even a single step can make climate change worse.
Let’s not wait for this phenomenon to ruin our lives. If we just have a further reflection, we will realize that supertyphoon Ferdie came to teach us a lesson which is to remind us that we must care for environment not only to fulfill our forgotten responsibilities but it is for our own sake. The real action that needs to be taken in order to at least diminish its serious cases is to change our negative attitudes toward our environment. If everyone is able to do it, then we will have a safer place to live…
